Letter to Thomas J. Chew, purser for the U.S. Navy, in New York City requesting his assistance in locating an unnamed African American slave who worked for the family of Mary Hillen of Georgetown, S.C. The unidentified slave, described as "a fine stout negro boy about 17 years of age," accompanied her son, Lt. James Dudley, as his manservant on a cruise of the Mediterranean; following Dudley's death at sea, the slave disappeared; Mitchell reports that Mrs. Hillen is "of the opinion, that he has enlisted as a free-man aboard one of our Warlike vessels."
